A new study suggest that those who stay fit as they grow older may live longer than people who are out of shape. This was done to about 4,000 U.S. adults. A research from the University of Scranton headed by Dr. Joe Vinson found that popcorn and other whole grain cereals contain large quantities of polyphenol. It is a type of antioxidant linked to lowering the risk of cancer, heart disease and other diseases. This was released in the 238th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society. Polyphenols can remove free radicals from the body. Radicals are chemicals that can damage tissues and cells. They can also be found in vegetables, fruits and coffee, chocolate, tea and wine.
No one knew until now that commercial cold and hot whole grain cereals counted as “healthy” due to their fiber content. They were also rich in dietary source of antioxidants. The research found was that whole grain foods have the same levels of antioxidants per gram as vegetables and fruits. This was the first time that a study to test total phenol antioxidants in breakfast cereals. The previous studies have measured free antioxidants in the products. The raisin bran contains the highest amount per serving because raisins also contain high levels of polyphenols.
